From the early Etruscan period through Greek influence to the height of the Roman empire, luxury gold jewellery was highly prized in Italian society. During the Middle Ages, fine art jewelry became the exclusive property of the church and the royal courts, but grew in popularity again at the time of the Renaissance in Tuscany.
Many of the great masters of Italian art, such as Donatello, Brunelleschi and Botticelli, all trained as goldsmiths with the famous goldsmith guilds that were established in Florence. It was during this period that gemstones became more widely available, and the design and production of exclusive Italian jewellery became more immaginative and more intricate than ever. The opening up of the great trade routes established Italy as one of the most important producers of luxury jewellery in the world.
At the heart of modern Italian jewellery production is the city of Vicenza in the northern region of Veneto. It is home to some of the most influential jewellery designers in the world, as well as being a centre of excellence in the production of gold and sterling silver jewellery.
Today, the industry is booming, with more than 10,000 businesses producing fine art jewellery in Italy, employing more than 40,000 people, using 500 tons of fine gold and 1,500 tons of silver a year.
